I'll be the first to admit that I have a lead foot when it comes to driving. I also have a hellish commute to and from work every day - 134 miles round trip, only 84 of which is expressway. But when traffic is backed up on the expressway during rush hour(s), and you physically SEE everyone lurch forward only to slam on the brakes suddenly 300 feet ahead... PLEASE don't follow suit. It's inefficient, and it's a waste of fuel and wears heavily on your brakes... not to mention the other bad stuff that it does to your engine/driveline.
I mean, what's the point? Do you think you're going to get where you're going faster by quickly accelerating only to brake hard? No. Do you think that by doing this the person next to you is not going to 'cut' in front of you? Maybe... but who cares! They'll just be right in front of you, and they'll only arrive sooner at the same place you're going to be a half second later. BFD.
Just slowly accelerate, gradually get up to speed, and if you're lucky traffic will continue to move. If you're not so lucky, well... at least you didn't wear down your vehicle more quickly. "Hurry up and stop" is not cool... not cool at all, people.
