#036 Premature Cheering

Professional, grade school and college sporting events all have one thing in common: the national anthem is either played or sung prior to its commencement.

If the national anthem is going to be sung, the singer needs to be rather accomplished to perform it in front of so many people. Otherwise, it just ends up being a disaster, and NO ONE wants to hear a poor performance prior to a sporting event. It should boost morale for the game about to be played, right?!

One thing that irritates me to no end is when people start cheering before the national anthem is over. If the song is being sung, it is a PERFORMANCE, and performances should not be interrupted. The song is not easy to sing, what with a key change, outdated lyrics and a high note towards the end... but when people start cheering/shouting/whistling/clapping before the song is over, that REALLY bothers me.

I mean, I understand that reaching that high note towards the end is a major achievement, but an accomplished singer should be able to hit and project that note with a fair amount of ease. So when people start cheering just after that high note, I get frustrated and annoyed. Just wait! What, you can't wait another 7 seconds to start your cheering?! Because that's really all the more time you'll have to wait until the song is actually over. That high note is NOT the end of the song!
