Tailgating (courtesy of dictionary.com): to follow or drive hazardously close to the rear of another vehicle.
Tailgating is one of the most inefficient forms of driving I’ve ever seen.
What’s the point? You must remain alert while you’re driving, but you have to be even more alert when tailgating than if you were just cruising along minding your own business. You must respond as quickly as the vehicle you’re following, you have to try to maintain the same speed (which most people are unsuccessful at doing, and therefore brake more often), and you can’t even see in front of you because the car ahead of you is too close!
What if the car ahead of you hits a huge pothole and you hit it, too, since you were following too closely to see it coming? Or, say the person in front of you gets that flat and then the tire blows out and causes more of an obstruction to you than if you were following at a reasonable distance. It’s just not worth the risk.
