#042 Pedestrian Bumps

Upon exiting a local store, I spotted this at the pedestrian entrances/exits:

What is the purpose of these? To warn the blind that they are about to enter the parking lot? To make you slow down as you’re exiting the store? To alert snow plows they are encroaching upon pedestrian space? Are they for anti-slip/skid purposes?

Whatever the reason, they are total overkill and completely annoying. Whenever I shop at this particular store, I actually make it a habit to park in the middle of the lot (not near the entrances) so that I don’t have to push my shopping cart across these "pedestrian bumps". I don’t actually know the proper name for these, so if someone knows what they are called, please comment.

People have shopping carts full of merchandise and they are forced to push through this extremely rough surface in order to exit the store to reach their vehicle in the parking lot. Upon pushing a shopping cart over this you are halted to almost a complete stop because the shock alone is enough to stop anyone in their tracks, let alone the extreme bouncing the shopping cart exhibits. Then, if you’re lucky enough to push through it, you’ve likely lost whatever was on the bottom of the shopping cart because it’s laying on the ground behind you.

  1. Interesting! I think I need to get out more often or visit the burbs because I have yet to see these!

  2. Way to keep it classy, "Anonymous".

Actually, I read somewhere it was for handicapped people... for when it's icy or snowy and their wheelchair needs to roll up a ramp. the bumps help them get a grip.

Wow... that's weird: Coincidentally, YOU need to get a grip!

  3. What a terrible idea. Those things cripple healthy people by snagging their feet and causing torn meniscus injuries.
